Duties * Evaluate requested test procedure to determine suitability of specimen and requests and/or obtains new specimen if determined to be unusable. * Must be able to perform phlebotomy and sample collection using appropriate safety standards. * Perform clinical laboratory tests on specimens as ordered with the ability to identify improper/incorrect orders. * Perform advance laboratory testing in Hematology utilizing advance technology. * Perform microscopic slide review to identify normal and abnormal blood cells when flagged. * Perform advance laboratory testing in Urinalysis utilizing advance technology. Able to perform microscopic review when flagged for Pathologic cellular or crystal sediment review. * Process laboratory specimens for shipment to reference laboratories using acceptable laboratory procedures following the 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requirements. * Conduct necessary quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures meeting regulatory compliance and within the standard operating procedures. * Perform preliminary steps for instrument setup, function verification and operation for instrumentation. * Must be able to work in a fast-paced environments that require quick decision-making and adaptability to new challenges. Requirements Conditions of Employment * Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. * Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. * This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so. * This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. * Must obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network. * This position has a requirement to lift up to 30 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. * This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. * This position may require the incumbent to work on an intermittent or unscheduled, on-call basis which may include weekends/holidays. * Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series. * This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination. * This position is a Testing Designated Position. All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) performing laboratory tests and examinations in the areas of chemistry, microbiologic, hematology, urinalysis, serology, molecular, and phlebotomy; 2) operating laboratory equipment; 3) sample processing; AND 4) reviewing findings against established quality control values and quality assurance standards.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Licensure/Certification: This position requires a certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD (HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), or Medical Lab Technician (MLT). Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
