Description:
Duties * Serves as Station Chief with Shift responsibility to direct firefighting activities of the crew with general instructions from supervisor. * Plans work schedules and operations to ensure an even flow of work distribution. * Direct crews in the performance of various standby duties at the station. * Execute and participate in training, practice drills and fire prevention inspections. * Directs the emergency care and treatment for illnesses and injuries of occupational and non-occupational origin for soldiers, dependents, government employees and visitors. * Manage and control firefighting operations and determines best utilization of firefighters and equipment for combating liquid fuel, chemical structural, or brush fires. * Assist supervisors in determining fire cause and origin and presents preliminary findings for inclusion in formal reports. * Provides supervisory control over firefighting personnel in the structural and aircraft crash firefighting environment. * Evaluates work performance of employees and provides advice, counsel, and instruction to on work and administrative matters. * Provides technical expertise on suppression techniques and prevention activities. Requirements Conditions of Employment * This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. * This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. * This position is subject to a drug pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. * The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. * This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. * Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. * This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time. * Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis. * This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. * This position requires the employee to work 72 hours a week (144 hours per pay period), which includes weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies. * This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). Controlling or extinguishing fires and responding to emergency operations for all hazard responses as a fully trained member of a fire department; 2) Training and education of firefighting techniques, safety and emergency medical services (EMS); and 3) Performing operational checks and inspections on firefighting an/or medical equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-8).
