Duties * Perform the full range of Polysomnographic studies including polysomnograms, multiple sleep latency tests, Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests, etc.. * Score polysomnogram, multiple sleep latency tests, and other sleep studies for physician review. * Recognize sleep apnea, sleep movements, nocturnal seizures, and parasomnias. * Perform a full range of electroencephalography, evoked potential, including intraoperative monitoring. * Recognize seizures and epileptic activity and abnormal electroencephalography and notify the provider if seen during the visit. * Manage medical emergencies and prepare a descriptive report of recorded activity for the interpreting physician. * Review patient records for contributing, complicating or other medical conditions pertinent to the performance of electroencephalography procedures. * Anticipate and correct factors related to patient discomfort, mechanical and electrical interference (Artifacts). * Select from a wide variety of electrodes and determine the best suited for each individual case situation. * Conduct activation procedures, including hyperventilation and photic stimulation, used in the assessment of cerebral reactivity and sleep. * Troubleshoot during the performance of evoked potential tests to detect artifacts or other technical problems relating to recording of cortical waveforms. Requirements Conditions of Employment * Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. * This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. * This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter. * The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. * This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) required to report to work or remain at work to support mission operations. * Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. * This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis. * Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series. * This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service which includes conducting a variety of polysomnography tests, electroencephalography intra-operative monitoring, anticipating and correcting factors related to patient discomfort, mechanical and electrical interference (Artifacts), employing sterile techniques when conducting EEG procedures; annotating any changes in recording parameters as well as independently performing and troubleshooting Cortical Evoked Potential studies that include visual, brain-stem and somatosensory evoked potentials. OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Polysomnography or Sleep Technologist. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
